Meet the Team

  • Calypso Citlali

    FOUNDER & MANAGER of BeyondMattrix

    Calypso has a deep love for art and movement and is dedicated to creating a positive shift in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu culture — working toward spaces that are more inclusive, equitable, and safer for everyone. Creativity is at the heart of everything she does: she spent 10 years breakdancing and has been passionately dancing Cuban Salsa since 2015.

    In 2025, she earned her purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where movement, creativity, and community come together for her. Calypso has strong experience teaching languages and dance to both adults and children. She is the facilitator and communicator of the camp, approachable for all questions and needs. She is committed to strengthening the FLINTA* BJJ community and promoting the visibility of women*/FLINTA* in combat sports by sharing their BJJ on social media. She will be happy to assist you in German, Spanish, French, English, and Italian.

  • Charlotte von Baumgarten

    MAIN COACH at BeyondMattrix

    Charlotte entered the world of combat sports as a teenager and has never stopped since. She earned her black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2017 under Ulf Ehlert and has taught at Ringside Gym, BJJ Akademie, and Fight Zone in Berlin, as well as at Mathias Ribeiro’s academy in Madrid. A dedicated and detail-oriented teacher, she is deeply committed to refining her students’ games and supporting their growth on the mats.

    Teaching since 2011 and with outstanding success at international competitions, Charlotte has long been a role model for women*. Among her top achievements are IBJJF European gold at every belt level, silver at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship, and No-Gi World Championship gold as a brown belt, all in the adult division. She enjoys teaching BJJ in German, English, and Spanish.

  • Julia B.

    YOGA COACH

    Julia B. is a BJJ purple belt under Markus Schmidt and a Luta Livre blue belt under Nico Welko. She is a certified Vinyasa and Yin Yoga coach and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Sciences with a focus on sports, health, and nutrition. Additionally, she is a licensed Be Body Positive facilitator through The Body Positive.

    BJJ has opened countless doors for her and introduced her to amazing people along the way. She loves sharing the mats, learning from others, and connecting with people wherever she goes. For her, the connection between yoga and BJJ is about being fully present in the moment. Julia is passionate about helping FLINTA* people feel truly connected to their bodies through movement—without hiding or shrinking. She believes yoga and BJJ can be powerful tools to build trust, confidence, and joy in the body, creating space to be fully seen and fully felt.

Camp Location

  • Modern training facility: FightZone Berlin moved to its new location in the Victoria Shopping Center in 2025. The gym features a large, modern mat area, two changing rooms, four showers, plenty of storage, and benches for resting or chatting outside the mat.

  • Convenient location: Just a short walk from Ostkreuz station, a major transport hub with easy access by S‑Bahn, bus, or bike.

  • Vibrant surroundings: Located in the heart of Berlin’s Friedrichshain district, the gym is surrounded by cafés, restaurants, green spaces, art venues, and attractions such as the East Side Gallery—perfect for relaxing between sessions.

Our Mat

BeyondMattrix is on a mission to make Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) inclusive, empowering, and safer for women*/FLINTA* practitioners and other underrepresented groups. We believe BJJ is about connection, confidence, teamwork, and respect—not just strength or skill.

We challenge outdated norms, break down barriers, and create spaces where everyone can train, grow, and thrive. Through weekend camps, workshops, and free rotating Open Mats in Berlin, we enable FLINTA* practitioners:

  • Take up space and rewrite the narrative in combat sports

  • Build skill, confidence, and mental strength

  • Focus on technique, strategy, and creativity over dominance or appearance

  • Access training fairly and feel welcome in every gym

  • Push back against sexism, gatekeeping, and unequal standards

Our events are led by experienced female* BJJ practitioners and teachers, who guide participants in a supportive, empowering environment.

BJJ is more than a sport—it’s a tool for personal empowerment, community building, and feminist action.
